Greek Chicken Souvlaki Pita Wrap
Some meals just transport you somewhere else, and Greek Chicken Souvlaki Pita Wraps always make me think of a sunny Mediterranean afternoon. I made these for my family last weekend when I wanted something fresh, flavorful, and easy enough for everyone to assemble themselves.
I had some chicken in the fridge and remembered a souvlaki recipe a friend had recommended. I marinated the chicken in lemon, garlic, olive oil, and oregano, then cooked it until the edges were beautifully browned.
I tucked the juicy chicken into warm pita with crisp cucumber, tomatoes, red onion, parsley, and creamy tzatziki. The combination was incredible. Everyone built their wraps a little differently, but somehow every plate came back completely empty!
It’s now one of my favorite relaxed weekend meals because it feels special without requiring complicated cooking.

1 teaspoon dried oregano
½ teaspoon paprika
½ teaspoon dried thyme
½ teaspoon black pepper
½ teaspoon salt
For the Tzatziki
¾ cup plain Greek yogurt
½ cucumber, finely grated and squeezed dry
1 garlic clove, minced
1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
1 tablespoon fresh dill, chopped
1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil
Pinch of salt
Black pepper, to taste
For the Wraps
4 whole-wheat or regular pita breads
1 cup cucumber, sliced
1 cup cherry tomatoes, halved
½ small red onion, thinly sliced
¼ cup fresh parsley, chopped
¼ cup crumbled feta cheese
Lemon wedges for serving
Instructions
1. Marinate the Chicken
Cut the chicken into bite-sized pieces.
In a bowl, combine olive oil, lemon juice, garlic, oregano, paprika, thyme, black pepper, and salt.
Add the chicken and toss until well coated.
Cover and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes. For even more flavor, marinate for up to 4 hours.
2. Make the Tzatziki
Combine Greek yogurt, grated cucumber, garlic, lemon juice, dill, olive oil, salt, and pepper.
Mix well and refrigerate until ready to use.
3. Cook the Chicken
Heat a large skillet or grill pan over medium-high heat.
Add the marinated chicken in a single layer.
Cook for approximately 8–10 minutes, turning occasionally, until browned and cooked through.
The chicken should reach 165°F (74°C) internally.
4. Warm the Pitas
Warm the pita breads in a dry skillet for about 20–30 seconds per side, or heat them briefly in the oven.
Don’t overheat them or they can become difficult to fold.
5. Assemble the Wraps
Spread tzatziki down the center of each pita.
Add the warm chicken, cucumber, tomatoes, red onion, parsley, and feta.
Finish with a squeeze of fresh lemon juice.
6. Wrap & Serve
Fold the bottom of the pita upward, then fold in the sides.
Serve immediately with extra tzatziki and lemon wedges.
My Tips for the Best Souvlaki
Don’t skip the marinade.
Even 30 minutes gives the chicken a wonderful lemon-garlic flavor.
Use chicken thighs for extra juiciness.
Chicken breast works too, but thighs are more forgiving.
Don’t overcrowd the pan.
Cook in batches if necessary so the chicken gets those delicious browned edges.
Drain the cucumber well.
Too much water can make the tzatziki thin.
Add feta at the end.
It stays creamy and salty instead of disappearing into the warm ingredients.
Diabetes-Conscious Version
A traditional pita can contribute a significant amount of carbohydrates, but this meal is easy to adapt.
For a more diabetes-conscious version:
Choose a small whole-wheat pita.
Use plenty of chicken and non-starchy vegetables.
Choose plain, unsweetened Greek yogurt.
Avoid sweetened sauces.
Increase cucumber, tomatoes, lettuce, and herbs.
Serve the chicken over a large Greek salad instead of using pita for a lower-carb option.
Always consider the total carbohydrate content of your individual pita and toppings.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use chicken breast instead of thighs?
Absolutely. Chicken breast works well, but be careful not to overcook it because it is leaner.
How long should I marinate the chicken?
At least 30 minutes is helpful. For deeper flavor, you can marinate it for up to 4 hours.
Can I make the chicken in an air fryer?
Yes. Air fry the chicken pieces at approximately 400°F (200°C) for about 10–14 minutes, shaking or turning halfway through, until the internal temperature reaches 165°F.
Can I make this without pita?
Definitely. Turn it into a Greek chicken bowl or salad for a lighter, lower-carbohydrate option.
Can I prepare this ahead of time?
Yes. Cook the chicken and prepare the tzatziki and vegetables ahead of time. Keep everything refrigerated separately and assemble when ready.
Is Greek chicken souvlaki good for a diabetes-conscious meal?
It can be adapted well. The chicken, Greek yogurt, vegetables, and olive oil provide a balanced base, while the pita is the main carbohydrate source. Choosing a smaller whole-wheat pita or serving the chicken as a salad or bowl can reduce the carbohydrate portion.
