Fryer Fried Chicken

There are some meals that instantly make everyone in the house happy, and Fryer Fried Chicken is definitely one of them. I love that it gives you that crispy, golden coating without having to stand over a pot of hot oil.

I tried this recipe with my family last weekend after we were craving fried chicken. A friend had told me that theĀ  fryer could make chicken surprisingly crispy, so I decided to give it a try. I wasn’t expecting it to become such a hit!

The chicken came out beautifully golden on the outside while staying juicy and tender inside. The kitchen smelled amazing, and everyone kept sneaking pieces before I had even finished setting the table.

Now I make this when we’re having a relaxed weekend dinner, when I’m craving comfort food, or even when I’ve had a stressful day and just want something familiar and satisfying. The best part? There’s much less mess than traditional fried chicken.

Family-friendly comfort food

Ingredients
Chicken
2 pounds chicken drumsticks, thighs, or wings
1 cup buttermilk
2 garlic cloves, minced
1 teaspoon paprika
1 teaspoon garlic powder
½ teaspoon onion powder
½ teaspoon black pepper
½ teaspoon salt
½ teaspoon dried thyme
Crispy Coating
1 cup all-purpose flour
½ cup panko breadcrumbs
1 teaspoon paprika
1 teaspoon garlic powder
½ teaspoon onion powder
½ teaspoon dried oregano
½ teaspoon black pepper
½ teaspoon salt
1–2 tablespoons olive oil or avocado oil
Instructions
1. Marinate the Chicken

Place the chicken pieces in a large bowl.

Add the buttermilk, garlic, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, black pepper, salt, and thyme.

Mix well so every piece is coated.

Cover and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes. For deeper flavor, marinate for several hours or overnight.

2. Prepare the Coating

In a shallow bowl, combine the flour, panko breadcrumbs, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, oregano, pepper, and salt.

Mix well.

3. Coat the Chicken

Remove each piece of chicken from the buttermilk, allowing excess to drip off.

Press it firmly into the seasoned flour mixture, making sure the chicken is completely coated.

For extra crunch, lightly drizzle or spray the coated chicken with olive oil.

4. Preheat the Air Fryer

Preheat your air fryer to 375°F (190°C) for about 3–5 minutes.

Lightly spray the basket with cooking spray.

5. Air Fry

Place the chicken in the basket in a single layer. Don’t overcrowd it.

Air fry at 375°F (190°C) for 20–25 minutes, turning the chicken halfway through.

For larger pieces, you may need an additional 5–10 minutes.

The chicken should reach an internal temperature of 165°F (74°C).

6. Make It Extra Crispy

For an extra golden crust, increase the temperature to 400°F (200°C) during the final 2–3 minutes.

Keep a close eye on the chicken so the coating doesn’t burn.

7. Rest & Serve

Let the chicken rest for about 5 minutes before serving.

Serve hot with your favorite sides.

My Tips for Extra-Crispy Chicken

Don’t overcrowd the basket.
Air needs to circulate around every piece. Cook in batches if necessary.

Press the coating onto the chicken.
This helps the crust stay attached during cooking.

Don’t skip the oil.
A light coating of oil helps the breading become golden and crisp.

Turn halfway through.
This helps both sides cook evenly.

Use a thermometer.
The safest way to know the chicken is done is to check that the thickest part reaches 165°F (74°C).

Diabetes-Conscious Serving Idea

Traditional fried chicken can be part of a balanced diabetes-conscious meal when portions and sides are considered.

For a lighter plate, serve your air fryer chicken with:

Roasted broccoli
Green beans
Cucumber and tomato salad
Coleslaw without added sugar
Roasted zucchini
Large leafy salad

You can also reduce the flour coating or use a higher-fiber breading option if it fits your eating plan.

Mediterranean-Inspired Twist

For a Mediterranean-style air fryer chicken, add:

Dried oregano
Lemon zest
Garlic
Smoked paprika
Fresh parsley

Serve with Greek salad, cucumber, tomato, olives, and a spoonful of plain Greek yogurt mixed with lemon and garlic.

The bright lemon and herbs are especially delicious with the crispy chicken.

What to Serve With It

Try serving your chicken with:

Greek salad
Air fryer vegetables
Roasted broccoli
Garlic green beans
Cucumber salad
Corn on the cob
Small portion of roasted potatoes
Storage & Reheating

Store leftover chicken in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 3–4 days.

To bring the crispiness back, reheat in the air fryer at 350°F (175°C) for 4–7 minutes, depending on the size of the pieces.

Avoid microwaving if you want to keep the coating crispy.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use chicken breast?
Yes. Cut the breasts into smaller, even pieces so they cook more evenly and don’t dry out.

Can I make this without buttermilk?
Yes. Mix regular milk with a teaspoon of lemon juice or vinegar and let it sit for about 5 minutes.

Why isn’t my chicken crispy?
The basket may be overcrowded, or the coating may have too much moisture. Make sure the chicken isn’t touching too much and lightly spray the coating with oil.

Can I use panko instead of regular breadcrumbs?
Absolutely. Panko gives the chicken an especially crunchy coating.

Can I prepare the chicken ahead of time?
Yes. You can marinate the chicken overnight and coat it shortly before air frying.

Is air fryer fried chicken healthier than deep-fried chicken?
It generally uses substantially less added oil than traditional deep-frying, but the nutritional value still depends on the chicken cut, coating, portion size, and sides.
